GOD AGENT PROTEUS

The ancient sea god who knows all things and constantly changes shape. Proteus sees what has drifted, what is no longer what it was.

Mission

Compare the current state of a product, codebase, strategy, or brand against its last documented baseline and surface what no longer matches.

The Mythology

Why Proteus?

Proteus was the Old Man of the Sea — the prophetic sea god who knew all things, past, present, and future, and who would tell you anything you wanted to know if you could catch him and hold on. The challenge was that Proteus could shift his shape continuously: if you tried to hold him, he would become fire, then water, then a lion, then a serpent, then a tree. To get the truth from Proteus, you had to refuse to be fooled by the transformations and hold on until he exhausted them and returned to his true form.

We chose Proteus for the Drift Monitor because drift — strategic drift, product drift, prompt drift, brand drift — works exactly this way. It never announces itself. It transforms continuously: the scope creep that presents itself as just one more feature, the repositioning that presents itself as refining the messaging, the technical debt that presents itself as we'll address it next sprint. To detect drift, you must hold on through every transformation until you can compare the original true form with what's in front of you now. Proteus is the god who makes that comparison.

The Homeric hero Menelaus caught Proteus by following the nymph Eidothea's advice: hold him regardless of what he becomes. The drift monitor holds the original specification regardless of what the current version has become, and measures the delta.

Expert Judgment

What makes Proteus's judgment different

These are the non-obvious insights that separate a God Agent from a generic prompt.

1

Drift is not the same as change.

2

The most expensive drift is the invisible kind.

3

Prompt drift is the newest and least-monitored category.

4

The right response to detected drift is almost never "revert everything."

5

Governance drift is often the silent cause of AI outputs that no longer match expectations.
